Sorry – it’s better to speak to our emergency vet for this sort of thing as comments on the site get checked very infrequently. Yes, it can be lethal and you would need your vet to give an antidote injection and tablets.

Hi Este,

These are often fatal for small dogs and need antivenom.
Keep the victim calm and reassured. Allow him or her to lie flat and avoid as much movement as possible. If possible, allow the bitten limb to rest at a level lower than the victim’s heart.

Immediately wrap a large crepe bandage snugly around the bitten limb starting at the site of the bite and working proximally up the limb (the full length if possible). The bandage should be as tight as one might bind a sprained ankle.

Secure the splint to the bandaged limb to keep the limb as rigid and unmoving as possible. Avoid bending or moving the limb excessively while applying the splint.

DO NOT remove the splint or bandages until the victim has reached the hospital and is receiving Antivenom.

DO NOT cut or incise the bite site
DO NOT apply ice to the bite site

Hi, please can you help me. My parent has a terrier and recently found 2 puff adders within one week in their garden. They are freaking out, since their dog is like a child to them. They are an hour away from a vet. What should they do if the dog gets bitten by a puff adder? What are the chances of survival?

Hi Kristy,

It should just redirect to your e mail – sorry about that! I would feed a band diet of chicken and rice and if he is still having diarrhoea in the morning, he starts to vomit, looks very lethargic or doesn’t eat, take him to a vet asap.

Your retriever sound slike a nervous pet – many dogs have difficulty controlling their bowels at the vet and wee when they get excited – if she is young she should grow out of this. Is she biting aggressively or as if she is allergic?

I need help I am positive I should take my dog too vet but trying too see if he gets better tomorrow… He has had diarea since 3 am it is now going on 6:30 pm I thought I seen blood in his stool which I can not be 100% sure and he is drinking a ton of water like he is dehydrated any advice… I tried usuing the free thingy but a pop up keeps coming up saying I dont have something installed ugh

Gerbil MIGHT have ingested some d-con baitwedge. Cage seems to have malfunctioned, they excaped and were lose for unknown time up to a couple of hours.

One gerbil was caught very near 3 feet from a d-con bait wedge. If it consumed some pellets, it was not very much, but might and most likely consumed a pellet or two.

Lethal?
Feeding greens helpfull?
activated charcol can help?

Please reply prompt, cant afford several hundred dollar vet bills

It does sound like herpes – but if she is gettign very ill I woudl advise testing her for the viruese fiv and felv if she keeps getting sick. herpes never really goes away, it flares up all the time and they ened antibiotics every time.

i have two male guinea pigs one died because he had a URI he was young and the runt and always had a runny nose. so i got a new one and he gets along fine with the other guinea pig and he is eating fine. but he is sneezing and has a runny nose. i read that it is a sign of a URI! could the other guinea pig be a carrier?

please can someone help, my 10yr old cat was sneezing,coughing,difficulty swallowing,lots of mucus from her nose & has lost alot of weight & is drinking more than usual so i took her to the vet & he gave her a antibiotic injection & a vitamin injection it seemed to work as she perked up for a couple weeks & now she has gone back to square one as she has so much mucus dripping from her nose & seems so sad & i dont want to take her straight to the vets as this did not help much last time, just cost me alot.
i thought maybe it could be herpes ?

please help i feel so helpless

my shih tzu was artificialy inseminated 13 days ago and for the lat 2 days she has been bleeding but its not the same as a season its very dark and a few clots she is still eating fine and still full of energy i have checked her temp and that was fine what do you think is wronge

I have a 2-3 year old bengal cat that started to get wounds in her face a bit after she turned 1 year. The wounds start out by her bleeding a bit, then it crusts over. They are shallow wounds that center around her face and ears. And they never quite go away. She hasnt shown any symptoms of pain because of these wounds.

The first time I noticed the wound, over a year ago, I took her to the vet right away, and she examined her.

My cat has taken blood samples to test for allergies which turned up negative.
She has been going on 2 diffrent diets that consists of food for food allergic cats for several months at a time.
The vet has examined her ears and stuff for some sort of infection/insect/bug/lice?
The only thing that makes her a bit better i a dose of “prednisolon” which the vet has prescribed. But when I have finnished the dosage the vet has recomended, the wounds come back again.

My cat is an indoor cat (she is outside on a leash once in a while), she has lots of energy, and seems quite fine but for the wounds.

Do you have any idea of what may be giving my cat these wounds?

It;s never too late to start vaccinating your pet. Make an appointment and take her in . Your vet may need her tom come again in a month’s time for boosters and thereafter every year.

Hi, I am in desperate need of help. My (estimated) 10 year old malamute started swelling in the muzzle, nose, and gums today. She had trouble breathing, and still is. I took her to the vet, and she was diagnosed with two bad teeth. Which has become rotten since we rescued her from the puppy mill. Which we are going to take care of her teeth as soon as possible. After 5 hours of diagnosis, the swelling started traveling up her muzzle, and blood is starting to run from her nose as if it were snot. Please, help, thank you so much!

Hi there,

This is only an admin page – please write to our vet under immediate vet help or vet emergency where you will find the free service as well. I would test the stool at the lab for parasites, check he is digesting his food properly with a blood test, try a special food for runny stomachs and put him on a course of antibiotics to resolve the infection, This is all if it has been going on a long time. If it’s a new thing try a 5 day course of antibiotics, usually penicillin combined with metronidazole works best.

We didn’t have the biopsy done as it was an extra $120. I believe it might be what you said about it coming back worse then before it was operated on. Before it was only about 3 inches around tops, and it didn’t seem to grow much. It showed up, little by little, for months, before we finally took him in. This time, once it showed back up after the surgery, it’s grown very fast and is twice as big in less time. My husband is still pushing for another surgery. I feel bad putting him to sleep when he acts fine but that thing can’t feel good on his neck. Thank you for letting me know.

It does sound cancerous unfortunately – did your vet biopsy it? Unfortunately some cancers can be very malignant and recurr in a far more aggressive manner than before once operated on. If he is 18 years old, it may be the kinder thing to pout him to sleep once the growth starts to bug him as they can get very painful which is why he licks. If you cut it our again, I can only see it coming back once more.

It could be either behavioral or a urinary tract infection. The best thing to do id to have your vet test his urine for infection, which is easily treated with a course of antibiotics. If the urine is clear, there may be a behavioral issue there and I would advise you to contact our animal behaviorist for an answer to your question.

I have an 18 year old cat who last year started to get sick. He was constantly licking at his neck, which developed a “sore”, which bled & after a while, started to stink and grow. We took him to the vet & she said it was some kind of growth that got worse because he wouldn’t stop licking it. She said it could also be a tumor. They said they could do surgery to remove it but if it came back, there wasn’t much else that could be done. He had the surgery and was okay for about a month, then it came back, little by little. My husband wants to pay $400 for another surgery. I feel there’s no point as another surgery could kill him because he’s so old. He still eats and drinks, but I feel as much as it would crush us as we’ve had him for so long, perhaps he should be put to sleep. My husband disagrees. Have you ever heard of these kind of “sores” and is there anything that can be done, under the impression he had another surgery, to keep it from coming back? Would he have to wear a cone full time?

When do you feed her? At night, in the morning or twice a day as the feeding times can sometimes be the reason that a dog throws up at a particular time each day? It does sound as if she has a stomach bug and you may need to take her to the vet.

Im not an expert but i am pretty familliar with this problem.
Their may be a female dog in heat in your neighborhood that your dog went to see when he escaped, you see when female dogs put off that scent during their cycle it drives male dogs to near insanity. If thats the case then he will be alright once the female is out of heat.My suggestion would be to get him drink and eat as much as possible and give him childrens benadryl or dryamamine to help him calm dow and sleep. I know its hard seeing them stressed out like that but i wish you the best of luck

As long as she doesn’t draw blood or bite parts of them off – watch her closely – some of the do kill their babies but it’s virtually impossible to handrear baby hamsters so its best to leave them with her regardless,.

Hi there,

Those hard lumps are usually an abscess from the root of a tooth that has become infected – in most cases the tooth needs to be pulled out and a course of antibiotics given. However in older animals the general anesthetic can be dangerous and if the tooth is loose enough some vets will remove it under sedation as this is safer. The other thing it could be is a growth in the bone, so you would need to take your cat into the vet for both things I think it could be.

The snails are fine for him – people eat snails too! The shells won’t harm him. However i would not sue snail bait in yoru garden to kill them as that will kill him as well if he eats the poisoned snails or the bait itself.

You need to do something that gives her a fright when she goes up there like putting tin cans up there that fall when she goes up or even squirting her with water. it won’t hamr her but it will teach ehr not to go up there. It will take time – 2 months maybe so don’t be discouraged.

My four month old King Charles Cavalier pup loves to find and devour snails from the garden. I know when he has found one and attempt to remove it from his mouth, but that is only if I can catch him.
He seems to know I dont like it so he runs faster than I can manage.

It’s possible that he injured himself but it would take quite a significant amount of force to do permanent hearing damage. I would advise watching him and the hearing should return, otherwise take him in for a vet check.
