Behavior – Is it too late to train my dogs?
Hi, my name is Samantha,
[ad name=”Tweet”]
I have a problem with my small dog Tequila. She is a Jack Russel cross Chihuahua and will be one year in December 2010. I also have a Boerboel Husky cross of an uncertain age as I adopted him from Fauna and Fora 3 months ago. He listens when spoken to most times but doesn’t do many tricks besides sitting and giving paw when getting a treat but he doesn’t run into the streets. The small dog, Tequila only sits when getting a treat and never obeys us. She runs into the streets every time she gets the chance and some days my husband and I will search for her walking the streets at one in the morning stressing if she’s alive and well!!
Is it too late for training for both dogs?
Dear Samantha,
Thanks for contacting me about your problem. It is very worrying when a dog runs out into the street, especially if you can’t find it. It is also very dangerous as the dog could get run over, and in your case as the dog is small, it can be attacked by a larger dog.
It is never too late to start training!!!!
The only problem is that an older dog is more likely to be more set in his/her ways and the owner has to work harder. But older dogs can still be trained and achieve good results at training. I would recommend enrolling both dogs into training, with your husband taking one and you taking the other to training. It’s difficult for one person to train two dogs at the same time.
You might even think about getting a behaviourist to come to your house and help with the problem. I’m not sure where you live, but ask your vet to see if there is one near where you live.
