Behavior – Small Dogs and Attention seeking Behavior
Dear Your own Vet,
[ad name=”Tweet”]
I’ve been wondering why is it that my Chihuahua Mix dog is always
hyper!! He always is biting my other dog and cries non stop! This has
been going on since he was a baby. He is now 1 year old.
I would love it if he would calm down his anxiety and leave my other dog alone
without biting her all the time. Is there anything I can do???

Small dogs are prone to attention seeking behavior
Dear Lucia,
The first thing you should consider is having your dog neutered. It will calm him down to an extent.
However, it is definitely an attention seeking behaviour, because when he does this you tell him to stop, and by focusing on what he is doing, you are giving him attention. All dogs want attention by look, touch and voice and the more you do one, or all of these, the more the dog will do the behaviour to get that attention.
What started out as puppy behaviour, has now become attention seeking.
If possible, ignore what he is doing by going out of the room and saying nothing. He will probably stop doing it and come and see where you have gone.
As I haven’t seen the dog, it is difficult to recommend more, as there are probably more things which are impacting on the behaviour.
If you know of an animal behaviourist that is nearby, you could get them to come to your home and assess and give advice.
