About the Authors

Claire Demmer

Claire Demmer studied Veterinary Science at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. She qualified in June of 1999 and has been in private practice ever since. In 2002 she returned, part time to the University of Pretoria to study Small Animal Medicine and Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics and obtained an Honours degree in both of these subjects in November 2005. She is currently registered with the British Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and works at the Sandringham Veterinary Hospital.

She has worked extensively both in South Africa and in the United Kingdom, dealing with some large animals but mostly focusing on canine and feline medicine and surgery, as well as exotic medicine including reptiles, rabbits, small rodents and birds.

Her interests include cytology, such as interpretation of blood smears and tissue samples, the diagnosis and treatment of Cancers, including the use of Chemotherapeutic drugs, and geriatric medicine, as older pets make up such a large part of our pet population and canine and feline behaviour.


Kathy Clayton

Kathy Clayton is an animal behaviorist and dog trainer, based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Kathy Clayton started training dogs over 30 years ago and became a dog trainer for a training club. This was a hobby whilst teaching Primary School Children.

In 1994, she gave up teaching and became a full time Professional Dog Trainer. After completing the Companion Animal Behaviour Course at Onderstepoort with the University of Pretoria, she became Accredited and started consulting.

Although based in the Northern suburbs, she travels all over Gauteng for behavioural home visits and private training. People have also travelled from Krugersdorp, Pretoria and the East Rand to attend training classes at K C Dog School.

Kathy has also conducted telephonic consultations with people in Dubai, France, California and Canada.

Kathy has two Border Collies and two German Shepherds which she trains in Obedience, Agility, Dog Jumping, Dog Carting and Dog Dancing.
